Marketing / STRATEGY NOTES

Before you hire a marketing team, hire a direction.

More hands will not resolve an unclear commercial priority.

More hands will not resolve an unclear commercial priority.

Name the constraint

A business with weak retention has a different marketing problem from a business with no awareness. Yet both often hire the same generalist and hand over the same impossible brief: own growth. Diagnose the constraint before writing the job description.

A busy team can still be standing still.

Separate leadership from execution

Someone must decide the audience, offer, priorities, budget, and measurement. Someone must execute the work. Those are connected responsibilities, but they are not identical skills. A fractional leadership model can help when the strategic need is real and the execution team is still small.

Build a ninety-day agenda

Choose one commercial objective, three supporting initiatives, and an explicit list of work you will pause. Assign an owner and a useful measure to each initiative. Review progress weekly, but give the underlying strategy enough time to generate evidence.

A small exercise, before the next meeting

Set aside twenty minutes with the people closest to your customers. Write your answers independently, compare the differences, and choose one change to test this week. Keep the scope small enough to learn something. Strategy becomes useful when it changes a real decision.
